How To Deal with Emotions in Everyday Life

Traditional notion of intelligence, better know as IQ or Intelligence Quotient is far too limited and does not paint a wholly picture of an individual.

Emotional Intelligence or better known as EQ, describes the capacity and ability for an individual to be aware of their ability to understand, express and work their emotions in everyday situations ranging from work to everyday scenarios. Or it can be summed up as: “How to make your emotions work for you, instead of against you.”

Based on the book: EQ Applied by Justin Bariso, the scope of emotional intelligence can be broken down into the following categories:

Self-Awareness: One’s ability to comprehend and identify an emotion you are feeling and how said emotion affects the way you think to the actions you decide to take.

Self-Management:One’s ability to control their emotions to prevent them from hindering the progress of achieving a goal or task. Think of it as self-control, after all you might have heard the phrase which describes it best: “You can’t always control how you feel but you can control the way you decide to act.”

Social Awareness: One’s ability to understand the feelings of others and how those feelings can influence behavior. Social awareness is often linked to empathy, the ability to see and feel things from another’s perspective.

Relationship Management: Last on the list, relationship management is the ability of an individual to influence others through communication and behavior. Individuals ranking high on this ability are often able persuade and convince others without force and to motivate them to act in their own accord.

You might realize that all of the four categories are interlinked and present in each and every individual. Naturally you might find that you would excel at certain aspects of the four categories and might display weaknesses in others. By understanding the importance of EQ in our daily lives, we can better learn to hone our strengths and work on our weakness to become a better individual.

In our current fast paced world where everyone has dozens if not hundreds of different habits, good or bad to help us to get things done throughout the day, e.g: Checking your phone for notifications the first thing you do when you wake up in case you missed any exciting or juicy news which occurred when you were asleep. Habits are vital and often developed to aid us in making habitual daily decisions compared to activities that are not habitual.

      Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. As an avid and curious learner, the book has definitely explained with examples and scenarios pertaining to Emotional Intelligence. In my opinion, It isn’t a very heavy book and I enjoyed reading it and I would occasionally refer back to the book when I’m facing difficulties.
